Research: social media - how it helps grow a business

Image
We’ve all heard about the importance of social media marketing. But if you think good social media eliminates the need for a great product, great customer service or other traditional marketing, think again. Vaynerchuk helped grow his family business, Shoppers Discount Liquors in Springfield, NJ, from a $3 million retail store to a $60 million success story. And he says social media was only part, though a very important part, of the process. As Vaynerchuk recalls, it didn’t start with a video blog or the trendy social sharing so often talked about today. It started with good old fashioned sales and customer service. He explains: “That was done through operations. That was me on the floor selling more. Then the website kicked in the momentum in 2000, 2001, 2002. Then search marketing 2002, 2003, 2004. Then kind of like just fixing, getting better at it in 2004, 2005. And then in 2006 started Wine Library TV which took it to the next place. And the reason it gets so much credit...

42% of online adults use multiple social networking sites, but Facebook remains the platform of choice. Research: More than 11m teens have left Facebook since 2011

Image
Over 11m teenagers and college students have left Facebook since 2011, an analyst claimed today. Digital consultancy iStrategy Labs today released a study it says uses data from Facebook’s own Social Advertising platform to come up with the shocking figures. Experts believe that young people are increasingly abandoning the site to turn to apps such as WhatsUp, Snapchat and others. According to iStrategy, Facebook has 4,292,080 fewer high-school aged users and 6,948,848 college-aged users than it did in 2011. Late last year Facebook shares went on a 24 hour rollercoaster after the company's chief financial officer admitted that teenagers are losing interest in the site. Shares in the social network soared around 15 per cent to $57.98 (£36.16) following the site's latest quarterly earnings announcement, before suddenly failing to $47.40. The dip was attributed to comments made by Facebook's chief financial officer David Ebersman about a decline in ...

Map that shows how tweets are shortest in the Deep South and getting shorter everywhere

Image
Twitter is unique for its brevity - only 140 characters are allowed in any post. But even within those tight linguistic confined, conversation is becoming shorter and shorter. Two researchers at the University of the Philippines have found that in just three years, tweets have gotten two words shorter - falling from 10 words, on average, to eight. Interestingly, the length of tweets also varies state-to-state. Twitter users in the Deep South appear to tweet fewer words and characters than anywhere else in the U.S. Shortening and streamlining language is a trend that has tracked with language through history - and it's been accelerated by Twitter, they say. Controversially, the authors of the study theorize that race is a factor in this trend. Internet keeps government honest: Google chief

Broader adoption of the Internet will keep governments on their toes as wired-up citizens exercise their newfound power to check rights abuses, Google chief Eric Schmidt said on Saturday. "In nations and communities around the world, citizens are turning to online tools to keep their governments honest," he told business leaders on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation ( APEC ) forum in Honolulu. "Whistleblowing has never been so easy," he said. Schmidt cited demonstrations that toppled the leaders of Tunisia and Egypt in which activists used Facebook to schedule protests, Twitter to coordinate them and YouTube to broadcast the events to the world. "Online citizens can find like-minded allies, they can find like-minded diasporas from a country," he said. With 52 percent of the global population under the age of 30, the youth can have a bigger say on issues because they are the most prolific users of the Inte...

Google Changes Search Algorithm, Trying to Make Results More Timely

By CLAIRE CAIN MILLER   SAN FRANCISCO — Acknowledging that some searches were giving people stale results, Google revised its methods on Thursday to make the answers timelier. It is one of the biggest tweaks to Google’s search algorithm, affecting about 35 percent of all searches. The new algorithm is a recognition that Google, whose dominance depends on providing the most useful results, is being increasingly challenged by services like Twitter and Facebook, which have trained people to expect constant updates with seconds-old news. It is also a reflection of how people use the Web as a real-time news feed — that if, for example, you search for a baseball score, you probably want to find the score of a game being played at the moment, not last week, which is what Google often gave you. “This is the result of them saying we need to find a way to more effectively get fresh content up,” said Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Land and an industry expert. “...
