Proven Strategies to Boost Your PageRank in Google

PageRank is a number between 0-10. Yes, when your at a zero ranking you are not even on the scale. A ranking of 10 is the highest. If you want to learn about details or see how a PageRank can be calculated then search for "PageRank" in Wikipedia.com. Google and Yahoo don't publicize the formula they use to calculate PageRank, in fact I am not sure Yahoo is still doing PageRank. Google definitely is, and if you want to grow your site be sure to monitor your PageRank there.

The overall principal to improving your PageRank is associating your web pages or blog with other web sites that are similar to what your site is providing. For example, if your key words are about baking, recipes, and selling sweets you want to be connected with sites that are similar. You don't want to be connected with sites that are selling auto parts or dealing with concepts that are not relevant to your key words. Get your self associated with sites like yours. The PageRank spiders do explore the content on your site and the sites you are connected with.

Many people just put up a site or blog, do no regular search engine submissions, no articles linking to their web pages, and have less that 50 links to other relevant web sites - so they end up with a PageRank of 0-2.

How can you improve the PageRanking of your web site or blog, without taking money out of your pocket?

1. Get connected to the web in general. Put the word out about your services and products. This can be easily accomplished by submitting free press releases and distributing articles that you have written to free article sites.

2. Do some reciprocal linking with other web sites. Go looking for sites that compliment your web pages or have similar products. Ask them to exchange links with you. There are rumors other there that say too many links are bad on a web site or hurt your PageRank. If that is the case, then why did ShastaConect.com go from a zero to 3 PageRank in six months? That site has over 300 links on it. And, those links are all relevant and similar to the key words and phrases being used there.

3. Step out with social marketing. Set up a Twitter account, Facebook account, or LinkedIn account and make some posts that include links back to your web pages. This is an easy way to accomplish distributing your news, gain some new site visitors, and increase your visibility.

Those three efforts will increase your backlinks. A backlink is simply a web site or blog that links back to your web page. You can get more specific info in wikipedia when you search on "backlink" but we can use this simple definition I have provided to understand what you need to do. Get more backlinks to your web pages. But, make sure they are coming from decent sites. The search engines do calculate and monitor the backlinks to your site.

You can explore what your PageRank is at the this site: http://www.microsoft-watch.org/cgi-bin/ranking.htm.

Folks I have shared time tested and proven strategies in this article. I promise that if you do these four ideas for just two hours a week - continuing over four or five months, you will see positive expansion in your web endeavors. Improving your web site ranking is not a fast food restaurant, there is no drive through lane. It takes time to gain higher visibility and anyone telling you different is probably selling you some swampland but calling it a "one of a kind" location.

Be patient, be diligent, and the rewards will appear.

What Are Quality Links?

If your site is rather new and still unknown, a good way marketing technique is to get involved in the community around your topic. Interact and contribute on forums and blogs. Just keep in mind to contribute in a positive way, rather than spamming or soliciting for your site. Just building a reputation can drive people to your site. And they will keep on visiting it and linking to it. If you offer long-lasting, unique and compelling content -- something that lets your expertise shine -- people will want to recommend it to others. Great content can serve this purpose as much as providing useful tools.

Internet keeps government honest: Google chief

Broader adoption of the Internet will keep governments on their toes as wired-up citizens exercise their newfound power to check rights abuses, Google chief Eric Schmidt said on Saturday.
"In nations and communities around the world, citizens are turning to online tools to keep their governments honest," he told business leaders on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Honolulu.
"Whistleblowing has never been so easy," he said.
Schmidt cited demonstrations that toppled the leaders of Tunisia and Egypt in which activists used Facebook to schedule protests, Twitter to coordinate them and YouTube to broadcast the events to the world.
"Online citizens can find like-minded allies, they can find like-minded diasporas from a country," he said.
With 52 percent of the global population under the age of 30, the youth can have a bigger say on issues because they are the most prolific users of the Internet.
"They are the ones who are online, that's how you reach them, that's how they talk to each other. They share applications and proxy and circumvention tools and help magnify each others' causes," he said.
But while governments should not ignore online protests, Schmidt also warned that they could be exaggerated.
"It's easy in the online world to create the impression of a revolution in the form of noise. It's important to understand what is a legitimate protest and whether it's just people trying to create some noise... some excitement."
Greater adoption of the Internet will lead to the creation of two global systems -- the physical sphere where the government has power over its people and a virtual world where people can have more influence, he said.
And there's little place to hide for those who do bad.
Atrocities against citizens can be documented more easily and "we can start trials against evil-doers before (their acts are) even stopped," he said.
"There are no caves online."
With only an estimated two billion of the global population of seven billion online, there is still room for expansion, Schmidt said.

Most common mistake of online marketing

The most common mistake of online marketing is ignoring the fact that the web - the Internet - is a fluid and morphing entity. The very foundation of the web is that IT IS, by it’s design, a social marketplace. Yet, the majority of people fail to realize this basic mechanic and therefore do not capitalize on its’ inherent connective potential. Instead, they make a site or blog, then follow the “current” trends to promote their products and services based on techniques and understandings founded in print and other media advertising. Sure, all those outdated understandings produce some level of juice. But those methods do not garner a robust buzz or following, plus they most certainly require big buck advertising.

No, the methods I prefer require much less cash infusion and rely more on sweat equity. I use and teach processes and procedures that harness the social nature of the web.

Check out the Cluetrain Manifesto, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cluetrain_Manifesto,  when you have time. It’s a campaign organized around 95 tenets that apply to all businesses operating within  this newly-connected marketplace: the web. These ideas are designed  to examine the impact of the Internet on both markets (consumers) and organizations. I think this document is required reading to get on the path of harnessing the fundamental mechanics of the web.

How to Implement a Working Social Marketing Strategy

Social marketing is the methodical use of techniques to solicit new connections and contacts that will produce favorable sales of your products and services. Since the internet connects all people in all communities and in every possible subset of potential interest - it's an ideal and comprehensive marketing tool. Seriously, the internet is a gleaming, sparkling thunder bolt horse, stomping its' hoofs - ready to charge forth on your behalf.

What is the first step? Your first goal is directing the thunder bolt horse to fulfill your goals, which is accomplished by creating your marketing plan.

Marketing Plan Components

This written plan must layout the benefits and characteristics of your products and services. Once you have those you can drill down to arrive at your key words and key phrases. With this in hand you can move forward with certainty about why people will be interested in your web site. After all, you have to be clear about what sets you apart from your competition - what makes your offering special.
The next step is designing your page content so that it uses specific key words and key phrases, while also making sure that those are use in your meta tags. Meta tags are shown in the HTML code, they are not displayed on the web pages your visitors view on your site. This content alignment: matching visible content with the meta tags in HTML code - is a simple method to search engine optimize (SEO) your web pages. SEO is essential if you want your web site to be noticed in a beneficial manner.

Optimize Your BackLinks or back links

Backlinks are an important strategy in SEO. You want to have reciprocal links with other sties that match these two criteria: relevancy and community.

A relevant link is one that matches the content of the web page or web site. For example, if you have a site offering clothing, then links to restaurants or auto repair are not relevant. A relevant link would be another a site offering different clothing or fashion accessories. An article about clothing design or fashion linked to your site is a good example of relevancy. A link from a online community about personal styles, clothing or fashion is another good example of a relevant link.

A community link might be that auto repair shop or restaurant, but you better make sure it's within 10-15 miles of you street address. Yes, search engines can figure this out using addresses on a web page or an IP addresses. Linking to a chamber of commerce or local organizations, non-profits are good example of community links.

Links on your web site that are not relevant or community based damage your reputation in the search engines.

PageRank is your web site reputation

Google has developed the gold standard to measure web site reputations. It is called PageRank. This standard is a complex algorithm that you really don't need to know, in fact they keep it secret. Just do the basics, which are discussed in this article, and you will see your web site begin to soar in search engines results. I know this from my experience of working with web sites for over 15 years.
An example, two people are selling apple pies and both use "best apple pie" for a key phrase. Someone googles "best apple pie" so which of those two sites will appear first in the search results? The site with the highest pagerank will be displayed first. You must boost your pagerank to set yourself up to be found and displayed prominently.

How to Improve your PageRank

1. Make sure you web site is indexed. If you don't know what this means then watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1k0e1Ej7nA.
2. SEO your web pages to optimize your key words and key phrases.
3. Increase the number of quality backlinks on your site.
4. Improve the visitor traffic to your web site.

How to Increase Your Web Site Visitor Traffic

Today, it is easier than ever to let people know about your web site. And, I am NOT talking about paying a service to do this. I am talking about sweat equity - taking the time to work the free and abundant social marketing tools and social networking sites at your disposal. You can also use online communities and articles to generate exposure about your web site. Once you have people at your site offer them an educational give away. When they take or download this freebie it creates a bond; make sure you design it right so they become one of your subscribers too.
Here are a few of the free tools available: Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, EzineArticles, YouTube, Scribd, Plaxo, and there are so many more. Perhaps the newest member, as of this writing, is Circles by Google.

Social marketing begins with a desire to expand your out reach. From that idea you create your marketing plan which integrates the fluid and dynamic environment provided by the internet from the comfort of your easy chair or kitchen table. Social marketing, using social networking with a written marketing plan is the perfect, affordable marketing solution for small businesses.

Google Changes Search Algorithm, Trying to Make Results More Timely

SAN FRANCISCO — Acknowledging that some searches were giving people stale results, Google revised its methods on Thursday to make the answers timelier. It is one of the biggest tweaks to Google’s search algorithm, affecting about 35 percent of all searches.

The new algorithm is a recognition that Google, whose dominance depends on providing the most useful results, is being increasingly challenged by services like Twitter and Facebook, which have trained people to expect constant updates with seconds-old news.

It is also a reflection of how people use the Web as a real-time news feed — that if, for example, you search for a baseball score, you probably want to find the score of a game being played at the moment, not last week, which is what Google often gave you.

“This is the result of them saying we need to find a way to more effectively get fresh content up,” said Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Land and an industry expert. “It does help with the issue of people thinking, ‘Wow, if I need to find out about something breaking, I’ll go to Facebook or Twitter for that.’ ”

Timeliness has long mattered to Google and its search results. Nevertheless, the company said that it always looks for improvements, and the latest change goes much further in freshening search results. Google tried once before to create real-time search, in 2009, when it introduced google.com/realtime, a service that incorporated Twitter posts that Google paid Twitter to use. But that contract expired in July and the two companies could not agree on terms to renew it, so Google disabled the site.

Americans still turn to Google for two-thirds of their Web searches, but for people who want the latest chatter about events happening now, it competes with Facebook, Twitter and Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, which includes more Twitter and Facebook posts than Google does in search results.
“The biggest source of the very freshest information is Twitter, and Google doesn’t have anywhere near the access to that kind of data as it had before,” Mr. Sullivan said. “But when people do those kinds of searches, they’re looking for a lot of reactions, looking for Twitter itself. So even with these changes, this doesn’t really solve that problem.”

Google became dominant by finding archived Web sites and showing links to them. But today people sometimes expect years-old links, like the best banana bread recipe; week-old links, like the last episode of “Gossip Girl”; or seconds-old links, like this morning’s presidential campaign news.
Google makes more than 500 changes to its algorithm a year, but most affect only a small percentage of results. With its new formula, which Google calls a freshness algorithm, Google tried to teach itself the difference between those types of requests, Amit Singhal, a Google fellow who works on search, wrote in a blog post announcing the changes.

“Depending on the search terms, the algorithm needs to be able to figure out if a result from a week ago about a TV show is recent, or if a result from a week ago about breaking news is too old,” he wrote.

“This algorithmic improvement is designed to better understand how to differentiate between these kinds of searches and the level of freshness you need.”

Google last announced a significant change to its search algorithm in February, when it said it would raise the rankings of high-quality sites to fight low-quality ones, often described as content farms, that were flooding the search engine with mindless articles tied to popular search queries.

The new formula, which affects search results globally but will not change nearby ads, will bring up minutes-old results for recent events, like an unfolding news story, and for recurring events like the Oscars or a political campaign. It will also show fresher results for topics that are often updated, like reviews of a new iPhone. It will understand that unlike breaking news, reviews from a few weeks ago are also useful, the company said.

These are “queries we don’t think we’re doing perfectly well on,” said Rajan Patel, a Google software engineer who worked on the new algorithm. “We just realized that people expect Google to return the most up-to-date results for all kinds of queries, from hot topics to more general queries like a TV show.”

For evergreen results, like recipes or how to change a tire, Google said the algorithm would know to show the best results no matter when they were posted.

The algorithm uses technology that Google built last year in response to the greater speed at which people were publishing updates online. It is a Web indexing system it calls Caffeine, which crawls the Web more quickly, updating Google’s index of Web sites continuously instead of every couple of weeks. Thursday’s revision changes how Google ranks those links now that it has them in its index, Mr. Patel said.

Google’s main competitor, Bing, has also developed a way to index Web sites that change often, like blogs and news feeds, and analyzes Twitter posts to identify popular topics, said Stefan Weitz, senior director at Bing.

Mr. Patel said that Google planned to incorporate posts from Google+, its new social network, into its search results to further improve their freshness.

Is Adsense right for your site or blog?

Google describes its’ AdSense as, “a free program that empowers online publishers to earn revenue by displaying relevant ads on a wide variety of online content.” Basically, when you participate in Adsense you create a free account with Google and then place some code they you provide on your page(s). That code determines the advertisement content to display, in the form of text ads, on your real estate - your web or blog page. The ads are from vendors who have already paid Google advertising money to display their content on pages appropriate to what they are selling.
